Hemlock Bay
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group (August, 2001)
Author: Catherine Coulter
Average review score:

Will the REAL Catherine Coulter please stand up!?!?
I just finished reading this book over the last three days and I feel like I wasted valuable personal time. This latest installment of Savich & Sherlock was a real disappointment.

The story finds our daring duo on the trail of a serial killer who is either male or female, has supernatural skills and can only be seen in her true form by secret agent man, Dillon Savich. I've never been a fan of mixing supernatural hocus-pocus with suspense. It never seems to add to the believability. Are their killers who seem superhuman and are hard to catch...of course but magically disappearing from crime scenes is lame. It also gives our hero and heroine less validity as top crime fighters.

The major reason to keep reading the book is the sub-plot of Lily Frasier's stolen artwork. Lily is Dillon's sister and has survived an abusive husband, her daughter's death, a new marriage where she has supposedly tried to commit suicide twice, and just had her grandmother's paintings stolen. Enter a college friend of Dillon's, Simon Russo. He is an art broker and helps Lily track down the true whereabouts of her grandmother's paintings. I liked the underworld of forged and stolen art by ruthless collectors. This really should have been the story.

I hope that the next installment is written with more care since this is definitely the weakest book in the series so far.

Supernateral Highjincks
Catherine Coulter's new mystery Hemlock Bay brings back two of my favorite characters, Dillon Savich and Lacey Sherlock, who are now married and have a child, Sean. Savich's sister,Lily, is in a terrible mess which involes her husband of 18 months, his parents and her Sarah Elliot paintings. Lily is helped by a friend of her brother's ,Simon Russo, who is an art dealer of sorts and discover's that four of Lily's paintings have been stolin and replaced with very good forgeries. Savich and Sherlock are also on the trail of the Tuttle brother's who kidnap young boys and then kill them. The Tuttle brother's are not what they seem. The supernatural highjincks involve the Tuttle's and and unknown force only known as the Ghouls. Overall I enjoyed the book. It was a fast read and fun. Ms. Coulter is getting better with her modern mysteries. I do enjoy her historical romance novels more but, I am becoming a fan of her modern mystery novels as well.

Definitely worth reading for the twists and turns!
Ok, so you have to get past some supernatural mumbo jumbo that is a little bizzar, but the rest of the book is very well done. I love Dillon and Sherlock and their adventures. There are several sub plots going at once and just when you get ready for the end (and the inevitable "let down" that the book is over) something else happens and you get to read on! Dillon's sister Lily isn't a helpless whimp - although Simon bordered on it at times. Well worth the read and I much appreciated how "clean" it was - just fun adventure and romance - not close-porn.

Edge of Danger
Published in Hardcover by Chivers (June, 2001)
Author: Jack Higgins
Average review score:

WARNING: This is the worst book ever written
As most people readers know, Jack Higgins has written many fine action-packed books. However, this book reads like a twelve-year-old wrote it. The characters are so transparent they could be ghosts.

The author and his publishing house must really need the money to rip of the public in this manner. This is the last book I read by this author. One can only rest on his laurels for so long. I'm glad this book was handed down to me or I would have written a really nasty review.

A Book Written by the Numbers.
This book was obviously written by the numbers, but Higgins appears to have become lost when he got to ten. Perhaps if he had removed his shoes it might have perked the tedious text up a bit.

"Paul Rashid was one of the richest Englishmen in the world." He was also half Arab and half British nobility. He and his brothers and one sister wanted to rule the world of Arab oil, but Russia and the United States did not support their hegemony. So, what to do? They would assassinate the President; that should show the meddlesome Americans. Why not kill the Russian President? Well, everyone knows the Russians are a second-rate power. No one would take that seriously. If you have taken this seriously so far I will not mention what they did to the Russian diplomat who killed Mom in a head-on accident in England. I wouldn't want to ruin the suspense for you if you buy this, this, this... story.

In the interest of full disclosure, I must state that I could not force myself past page 51, despite the fact that I was desperate for a good mystery to read. Someone else will have to tell you whether their plot succeeded.

Better Than Most Higgins Tales
Edge of Danger is a step above a number of recent Jack Higgins tales. The protaginist - Sean Dillon, must track down a dangerous Middle Eastern billionaire before he can reek havoc on the world. While prior to 11 September, this book is relevant to our crisis. Higgins does a nice job bringing out more dimensions of Dillon and some of the other good guys. The author bumbles a chance to knock off a key character - losing the opportunity to add some tension and passion to the survivors. Incredibly, this person takes three bullets and lives. The plot is solid and fast paced. My only problem is with the enemies. They are too cold and their motives are weak. The key assaisin could audition for the Key Stone Cops. Don't get me wrong, the Edge of Danger is a good yarn. I hope Higgins continues to improve the depth and reality of his characters. I look forward to the next edition.

You really need the video to follow this booklet. On it's own, it's not very helpful.

IIS 4.0 MCSE Study Guide
Published in Hardcover by Hungry Minds, Inc (May, 1998)
Authors: Jeff R. Dillon and Steven W. Linthicum
Average review score:

Think of Something Else
This book is very incomplete: it contains no Index Server topics, no SQL Server integration, but has a lot of useless stuff. If you want to study for the exam, you'd better choose another study guide.

Tons of fluff with no substance
This book will definitely not give you the "ultimate competitive edge"! One half of the book is basic and useless info on nt security and network config, in which everybody who reads this book should already have plenty of experience. The other half is a haphazard collection of advanced topics with no structure or organization, impossible to understand in the format presented. This book is a huge waste of time and money.

Good info but beware of the mistakes
This book covers most of the information you will need for the exam but is light on SQL Server integration details. Also, some of the information is incorrect -- specifically some of the screen shots of the Management Console windows. As you read the text you should have the IIS product in front of you to verify that the information in the book is correct. I would have liked to see better organization of the information into topics instead of covered across chapters. Overall, however, the book covers the material pretty well.

I Was a Fugitive from a Hollywood Trivia Factory: A Book of Hollywood Trivia Lists
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (June, 2000)
Author: Aubrey Dillon-Malone
Average review score:

Trivia calamity.
I'm so ashamed of myself. I yield to temptation and bought a horrible, terrible book "I was a fugitive from a Hollywood trivia factory"(A book of Hollywood lists) by Aubrey Dillon Malone. After reading it I felt in the same league of celebrities biographies readers, whose favorites books are the bios of Monica Lewinski, Princess Di and the Royal family of Monaco. Why did I spent 16 hard earned dollars in this kind of trash? Because the title and the cover fooled me, and I thougth that I was buying a book written in a similar pulp style of my beloved film directors: Tim Burton and John Waters. Boy, was I wrong! What I found was a book superficial, unimaginative and full of errors. The author is like a grandmother who likes to repeat the same stories over and over again: How Woody Allen left poor Mia for her adoptive daughter; how Robert De Niro won 60 pounds for his role in Raging Bull. Most of the trivia facts in this book are really boring and the author makes mistakes as writing Anjelica Huston name in one page with an j and in other with a g. Dillon Malone makes unforgetable omissions as not including Clint Eastwood's Oscar winner film "Unforgiven"(1992) in her list of 10 westerns nominated for best picture at the Oscar. Let's not be totally negative, Dillon Malone book "Stranger than Fiction", a book of literary lists is a lot better, maybe because literature hasn't been as overexposed as movies.
